The children could glue their magnifying class on construction paper and then draw an outdoor scene with the paper bugs in full view.

Using the Feeling Faces from Sunflower Storytime, I made up a folder story for my Feeling Storytime. As you tell the story, have the children help you make up a name for the child in the story. They can make up an age for them too. Let the children try to guess each time what emotion their new friend is feeling as you tell the story.
The Surprise Party
Let me tell you about my friend (make up name). They woke up on their birthday and they were turning (make up age). They felt so ….happy.
Being (age) sounded like a lot fun. They hoped all their friends came to wish them happy birthday. But after awhile nobody came to the house and no one brought presents. They felt so …scared.
They thought their family and friends and even the dog had forgotten their birthday, they felt so…sad.
Turning (age) was special and important. Didn’t (name) family and friends and dog know that? They felt so…angry.
Just then (name) heard a noise. They went into the living room and oh look everyone had been hiding from (name). They had cake and balloons and presents. They felt so …surprised.
(name) thought everyone had forgotten their birthday but really they had been hiding and waiting to scare them for fun. (name) felt so…silly.
We needed something fun to take to a preschool storytime about the United States. Since a lot of our patriotic felt boards are for July 4th, I made up a new folder story.
Grand Old Flag In the city of Springfield there was a school and at that school there were many children. The children had a plain white flag, but they wanted a flag to show how special their school was. They thought of what the flag should look like and they told the teacher their ideas.
We love to play outside in the warm sunshine, so our flag should be made of circles. (pull out white sheet)They looked at the flag, but something was missing.
We love to fly kites in the wind, so our flag should be covered in diamonds. (pull out circles)They looked at the flag, but something was missing.
We love to read books with stories so our flag should be covered in squares. (pull out diamonds) They looked at the flag, but something was missing.
We love to love to get hugs and kisses from our family so our flag should be covered in hearts. (pull out squares) They looked at the flag, but something was missing. The teacher thought and then decided; “Because we all live in the United states our flag should have stars and stripes. And our flag should be red, white and blue.” (pull out hearts) It was a grand, grand flag. And nothing was missing because it was perfect.

Books I Love My Daddy by Giles Andreae How to Cheer Up Dad by Fred Koehler Guess How Much I love You by Sam McBratney - My favorite of the bunch. I love having the kids stretch to show how far their love goes. It might be corny but to me it's a classic.
Folder Story I had made a folder story with paint that changes colors but I hadn't used it yet. I made up a tale about a dad on father's day. Oh, Were They Ever Happy by Peter Spier
We ended storytime by watching the filmstrip of Oh Where They Ever Happy by Peter Spier. It's only 4 minutes long and it's colorful. I liked that the words were at the bottom for the older kids to try to read so they could follow along with the narrator.
Howdy I was inspired by folder stories last week. Other staff use them. I saw some ideas online. However I've never seen a librarian present a folder story so I didn't know how to begin. I did a quick google search and found a template I thought I could try. (Not) Flannel Friday: “Mrs. Mark’s Favorite Color” File Folder Story
Here's the final result. I can't wait to test it on my storytime kids. Basically the folder has a cut out to reveal changes in the story. In my story the colors change and at the end there is a rainbow made of all the preceding colors. And if you are organized or have nimble fingers you can change out of the papers without dropping the contents of your folder story on the floor.
Next time I think I might try a story that didn't require you to cut out two holes for the colors to show through. For some reason I found this added feature really confusing. Laura
