Happy Noon Year Storytime

I am starting storytimes at a new library.  I have decided at least for now to forgo themes and any ages limits.  Overall the kids had a great time.  Despite the ages and the array of books I brought with me, I felt my book choices were often too short or too long.  The kids ranged in age from 2-8 years and clearly I need to work on all ages programming.

Books

The Elevator Song from Jbrary

Oh the city is great and the city is grand
There's a whole lot of people
on a little piece of land
And we live way up on the 57th floor
and this is what we do when we go out the door.
We take the elevator up and the elevator down,
take the elevator up, take the elevator down
Take the elevator up and the elevator down
and we turn around.

Oh the ocean is great and the ocean is grand.
There are lots of tall ships and very little land.
And we sleep down deep in a hammock near the floor
And this is what we do when we go out the door:
We ride the waves going up, we ride the waves going down
We ride the waves going up, we ride the waves going down
We ride the waves going up, we ride the waves going down
And we turn around.

Oh the fair is great and the fair is grand
There are lots of tall rides and cotton candy in your hand
Better get your ticket quick and don’t be late
And this is what you do when you go through the gate
Take the roller coaster up and the roller coaster down
Take the roller coaster up and the roller coaster down
Take the roller coaster up and the roller coaster down
And we turn around

Closing Rhyme

There lived a teeny * *

But most of all * *
She loved to clap * *
She clapped all night * *
She clapped all day * *
She clapped to frighten * *

Here is another Pinterest discovery you can use in your teen department.  These Book Fortune Tellers were inspired by Literary Hoots's post Fortune Teller Library Display. At Literary Hoots you can find a printable for the poster and four variations of the fortune teller. I ended up using the form to make my own so I can easily change them out or print extras as the original disappear.

*update* - My teens may think the fortune tellers are their's to keep. I put this display out Friday afternoon and I've had to print three more.  Staff suggested I just leave them the printed sheets and let the teens take the time to fold them up to at least save myself some time.

Drive-In Movie

Howdy
I planned my first Drive-In Movie this summer.  I don't know who to thank for the original idea but it sure is a keeper. I gathered boxes and supplies for 30 preschool age children. On the table pictured below you can see decorations : license plates, flames, bumpers, racing stripes, lightening bolts, bumper stickers, steering wheels, wheels, and two kinds of gauges.  We made headlights out of silver metallic cupcake papers; they are on the table too but it looks like a white circle from above. The children also had crayons, glue sticks and brass fasteners so the steering wheels could actually turn when attached to the boxes. Our 30 cardboard boxes were gathered from cataloging, so thank you Baker & Taylor for the supplies.

With the supplies set out, we had the movie collection Mater's Tall Tales ready to play on the big screen. Before the movie the children selected their box and supplies.  They set to decorating which took about 15 minutes.  After which we dimmed the lights and started the movie.  The movie was about 30 minutes so the whole program took about 45 minutes; which for preschool kids was plenty long.

The only negatives to the program were we had a lot of very specific supplies left over that I don't know for sure how to reuse. Also the movie skipped badly at the end and eventually froze.  I would definitely prewatch the movie to try and avoid this for next time.  In the future I would love to repeat this program where the kids can make fire engines, police cars and other specifically vehicles

Music and Movement - Welcome

Music and Movement is a nine week group of preschool storytimes that last from 35-45 minutes with an emphasis and keeping the kids extra active.  There is no craft at the end.  Ideally each class will use two hand outs such as shakers, scarves, drums, bells, ribbon wands and rhythm sticks.

Mardi Gras - School Age Program

Howdy
Our Mardi Gras Program was for kids 5+ and we hosted this program at night.  Next time I think we'd consider an after school event as the turnout was low.  During any of the craft time we played the cd Jazz for Kids; Sing, Clap, Wiggle and Shake.

Book -
Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast by Josh Funk

Felt - Princess and the Pea and the Pancake
Using the story The Princess and the Pea by Harriet Ziefert, I rewrote the story so that the pea is hidden under 10 pancakes, 10 splashes of maple syrup and 10 pats of butter.  I cut the shapes for each ingredient.  I passed all the shapes out randomly and then had the kids add them to a plate I brought so we could see how high the stack got. I will include the rewritten script at the bottom of the post.

Craft - Make jester hats using the templates at the link below. You will need construction paper in three colors , scissors, glue and a stapler or tape.

Parachute Play Songs

Howdy
This is an update to my first Parachute Play post. That post was a full program based around the parachute; it also included some stories.  This post will be songs and rhymes that I have been using lately at the end of a traditional preschool storytime for children ages 3-5 years old and their grownup. I usually do parachute play for one class during a 6-8 week block of storytimes and we will play for about 15 minutes. All of these activities work best with grownups helping at the chute so that no one gets knocked to the ground.  I usually pick a few of the songs each time.  I don't do everything listed below because I think that would be a very, very long storytime.
