We started class with our octopus friend.  The kids don't think he need a name.  They were eager to tell me how many legs he has and if that number was more less than spiders, dogs and nearly everything else they could think of.

Felt Board
I loved the rhyme Bubble Bubble Pop on the YouTube channel for Champaign Library. I have a set of felt sea creatures so we sang the song with the colors and names of our ocean friends. 

One Little red fish

The kids liked the pop ending of Bubble Bubble Pop so much we did our Ten Little Bubbles  rhyme next.  There is a great video by Boone County Public Library so you can learn the tune.

Craft
For our craft I made a simple pattern worksheet using surfboards.  I encouraged the parents to help their children trace the patterns with their fingers before coloring the sheet.  Click the link below for your own printable.

This song was so short that even though I had it on cd we just sang along together.  To my surprise several of the children knew the tune already.  The song was so well liked that we continued to sing it while adding other things we loved like our siblings and pets, also chickens.  :)

Felt Board
5 Little Hearts (colors rhyme)
All the little hearts that that I once knew
All lined up for me to view
But one is special, one is the best
One stands out above all the rest
My favorite heart’s name rhymes with …

With some groups I can call out a rhyming word for each of the colors and with some prompting the children will identity the correct color. Other times it works best to leave out the rhyming portion and state the last line as "My favorite heart's name is..." and we simply name all the colors as I point to them.
